State of the Union

Do you have a New Years Resolution? I am not a big New Years resolution maker but I always have a few. I actually try to have a few "State of the Union" addresses each year. Do you know what I mean by that? The president of the United States always gives a "State of the Union Address" (or more simply state "State of the country address) to congress and citizens. He tells us what is going on and what we are going to do better. I am better at doing State of the Union Addresses than New Years Resolution. Here are mine

I climbed part of the stairs at K-1 (we are fixing the other part. No, not with an elevator but better stairs) and I couldn't breathe at the top.

What I am going to do:

Run at least twice a weeks so I will be ready to conquer those this summer

No snow in Branson. In fact, this winter has brought 60 degree weather. What!?

What I am going to do:

Pray for snow everyday until I see some. If we don't get any, I might make my own. Did you know that you can order real snowballs to be sent to your house? Yep, they pack them on dry ice to keep them frozen.

My favorite place to eat is Chick-Fil-A. I always crave it on Sundays and a couple of times have started heading that way to get my Chicken Sandwich on Sundays. Usually about 1/2 way there I realize that they are closed on Sundays. My first reaction is to be frustrated but then I am quickly reminded that they close on Sundays so their employees can go to church and have time with their family. Love that!

I took quite a big break for Christmas and now I am back getting ready for camp. I know its January but around here we are always getting ready. Christmas ends and it seems like summer comes so fast! The first step is to get your counselors and kitches hired. We will do that next month. We are also planning for the parties. Stay tuned I want to get your opinion on which parties we should choose.

I know that some of you went back to school this week but don't be discouraged. Kanakuk is on the other side of this semester at school! Funny skits, fun friends, and learning about Jesus is on its way.

Soul Surfer

Have any of you seen the movie Soul Surfer? It is about the girl who lost her arm surfing due to a shark attack. She overcame losing her arm and started surfing again. She even won a championship two years later and is still competing. I have not seen the movie but I have heard it was really inspiring and really clean. I always checked in Plugged In for movie reviews and this is what they say.

Here is the trailer:

There is a shark attack (not super gory but enough to show you the seriousness of her injury and life threatening experience) For sure ask your parents first and don't watch it with someone really young. That could be scary.

The reason why I bring all of this up is I saw a video about the real girl, Bethany Hamilton. She did an interview with "I am Second" organization. "I am second" is kind of like "I am third" it just simply states put God before me. It shows interviews of people who have chosen God's way over their own way...becoming second to God. Here is the real Bethany Hamilton (the girl in the movie is an actor) She is much older now (probably 18 now) but her faith is still strong.

I am so amazed by how Bethany gives God glory. I hope I can do the same NO MATTER WHAT HAPPENS.

One of my favorite things that we do at camp is have a Gak fight (like a food fight). Our gak is a little bit more watery because it has to be for 400 people to engage in a food fight with Gak. I Love Fall

I love the summer and miss it when its not here but the next best thing is the fall. Here is why I love the fall:

College Football - Go Sooners
Seeing friends I haven't seen in a while. You know when you get home from kamp and you can't wait to catch up with your friends? I do that too! I am at camp all summer so it might be three months before I see a friend.
Long Sleeve shirts and shorts. Its my favorite outfit EVER! You can only do that in the fall. Its warm enough for shorts but still comfortable for long sleeves!
Barbeques. I know this is more a summer thing but Fall Barbeques are better. Why? Bonfires are more likely to be involved. Chilly evenings with a bonfire....love it. It makes me miss camp too.
The Changing of the Leaves. Its my favorite part of God's creation. The color is amazing!
Thanksgiving - its my favorite Holiday....hands down. Yes, more than Christmas (don't worry, I love me some Christmas so this says alot) I love thanksgiving because its family, its eating, and more importantly you focus on what you are thankful for and not about what gifts you will get. (Plus...my favorite part of Christmas is putting up my tree and that happens the day after Thanksgiving!) Yes, I know that we celebrate Jesus' birth at Christmas and I do love Him the most...but did you know that Jesus was really born in the fall? We just celebrate his birth in the winter. If you look at the calendar in bible times and all the times and events around Jesus' birth it puts Jesus' birth sometime (in our Calendar) in October. See...another good reason to love the fall.

The K-Life 10K

This Labor Day weekend I ran a 10K race. A 10K is 6.2 miles and the entry fee benefitted K-Life, an organization I am dearly love. The great part is that two K-1 girls ran too. They ran the mile and the 5K. Emily and Molly I am really proud of you! All that track K-work paid off right? :)

Notice Emily and Molly have medals. They both placed for their age groups! I think they both got first place! Great job gals!

I am back! I took a break this summer because we had our k1.kanakuk.com blog that was doing so great and being updated all the time. Now it is time for me to pick back up with where I left off. Oscar Night And Movie Night

Lights, Camera, Action....The last few nights have been fun. We have had half of the cabins in camp and half of the cabins out on trip. The kids that were in camp last night had a movie premiere party. The girls were escorted to the movie premeire in a limo! They walked the red carpet and had a blast. I'M Third Sunday

Today was the first full day of kamp, it was I'm Third Sunday AND we had our first party...Willy Wonka! If you check out k1.kanakuk.com you can find a highlight video of the days events, footage of the Joe's I'm Third Talk and even an interview with Joe about why he loves K-1.

Which brings me to tell you why we have two blogs. My husband is the K-1 Social Media Director. He runs around all day videoing and tweeting and letting moms and dads know whats going on at kamp for both sides. He is able to do what I can't do...have a video camera in his hands at all times. My blog is written from the eyes of a director. I hope to show you little things that a highlight reel won't pick up. I hope to open the door to the little moments of K-1 that you aren't expecting to happen. I will post pictures and videos too but my #1 priority is to be a director. Diane and I are teaching classes, meeting with staff and making sure kamp is happening they way it should. The video camera can't always be with me...but I am excited for you to see kamp throuh my eyes.

I sometimes grade honor cabin. The kids know the honor cabin "grader" as the "Mystery Lady" I am not usually the grader but I was needed today so I stepped in. The kids go all out to clean their cabin so that they can win the big prize. Some cabins even write the "Mystery Lady" messages on their porch made out of peat gravel. Here is the message I stumbled upon this morning and it made my heart swell.

"I Love Jeuses" This was on the porch of cabin one. I love that they wanted the "Mystery Lady" to know this. I don't think Jesus cares one bit that His name is spelled Jeuses.

Opening Day

Today is the day tha I wake up and get to tell counselors what cabin they will be counseling. Then the rest of the morning we run around getting ready for this moment. We run around all day everyday during Staff Training Week...but today, there is extra spring in our step. The kids are arriving and its exciting. We did pause today and show our staff this video. I cry every time I see it. I hope these parents got to say all the things that you would want to say to your kid's counselors. This time is what we call the "Worth of a Child" talk. I wanted you to see it.

Soon after this talk the counselors get the names of the kids in their cabin. They read through your notes, comments, and take note of every kampers needs. Here they meet their kiddos "on paper". In just two short hours those pictures become real faces. Did I mention that I love this day. We had a fun opening day. The kids found out their cabin, were introduced and literally slid down a slide to their counselors. Our theme is "Game On" so they got to tailgate with all the staff and kampers. Here are a few shots of some gals getting introduced.

New Bathroom Curtains! Every Cabin is different. I can't wait for you to see it. Now I have to go see if the new 60inch flat screen is installed in the dining hall. Wait...oops...I think I might have slipped on a secret! Its official....2 1/2 days until the kids come!

Selfishness

This summer we will be doing some fun activities to learn about Character Qualilities. Each year you are at kamp you will be learning about a different one...depending on how old you are. All of the kamps are doing them. I must say that they are going to be fun. They will not be a talk but hands on learning...and I can't wait. Anway, one of the character qualities was Selflessness. I was researching some fun media that had to do with being selfish or had to do with be Selfless. I found a hilarious one that had to do with selfishness. This video is the definition of selfishness....a dog defending his bone. Except this time, the dog is trying to keep the bone away from....himself. I haven't laughed this hard in a while.

Your K-1 Princesses!!!!

So, I spent last weekend hanging out with the Princesses for K-1. All of the princesses (the 18 year old ones) that are elected the prior summer at K-2 come for a fun weekend. there are girls there that will be the princess at K-2, K-1 and K-Kountry! We spent a fun weekend planning stunt, learning about leadership, playing octopus ultimate frisbee (yes you read that right...ulitmate frisbee with a dead octopus) We went to a thrift store and got all dressed up to go to sonic and bowling. We played tons of games. The dodgeball game was tied. We didn't do a girls vs guys game....bummer! Here are your princesses.

Cheif and Princesses Weekend

I have a fun weekend coming up...yes I do! Guess who is coming to Kanakuk to get ready for the summer....all the Chief's and Princesses! Yep, all you Kicks and Kiowas get excited because those princesses that were elected at K-2 last summer are coming to prepare to make summer fun for you! What do we do? Well, we help them plan stunt, we tell them what its going to be like as a princess, and we have lots of fun. Can you imagine coming to camp before it starts! We might even have a tribal warball game. Yep..Kicks versus Kiowas. Its not for points of course, just to get the excitement going for competition. (Is anyone singing the competition song in their head like I am?) My favorite warball game is the Kicks and Kiowas verses the Choctaw and Cherokee Chiefs. (Remember we have got the 18 year old princesses and chiefs that are not only going to K-1 but also K-Kountry and K-2). I get to play that game and I plan on wearing one blue and white sock and one red and white sock. The girls need to win this one!

The most important thing that we do this weekend is challenge these princesses to lead you and lead you well! I am excited for you to meet them. You will have to stay tuned on Monday because I will post pics!

Fur Coat

I am wearing a coat today. I don't understand how it can be 80 degrees outside one day and now its 50! Burrr... A friend sent me this. Since I am wearting a coat today I thought it was fitting. I am glad I am not wearing this coat.

I am impressed that all those animals can stay still. My piper would have never sat there like that animal did around her neck! Are you ready to not wear winter clothes like me? Bring on the shorts!

K-1 Parties

I spent some time this week planning the Menus for our parties at kamp. All of that is a surprise but I thought I would share the parties with you. The descriptions are not done and we will be sending them with your kamper packet, but I thought I would give you an inside look.

We have not decided which parties would be in what part of the month term, so stay tuned for that when we send out our info magazine! If you are a 13 day kamper you will get two and a 28 night camper will get all four. I will say, we might throw some surprise parties on you this year...so get ready.

2011 Parties at K-1

Kountry Klub - you never know, we could be doing activities from the finest of country clubs OR the club could be run "KOUNTRY" style. Can you imagine hillbillies playing golf or going to the spa? We might want to put up the nice table cloths........

Willy Wonka's Chocolate Factory....I have one word for you. Candy at camp. Enough said.

Gold Rush - We will go back to the mid 1800s and search for unfound gold. This will be a fun adventure.

Shipwrecked - A cruise ship shipwrecked....sounds bad but I promise that it will be worth the "wreck"!

The descriptions in the camper magazine will explain the potential costume ideas!!! We are already starting to plan what we are going to do.......I love my job!

If you read my post on Friday I told you that I was going to see the Justin Bieber Movie and I said that I would post what I thought. So...here are my thoughts...

#1 - Its a fun movie. Its clean and its postive.
#2 - It made me want to bust out the Kamp "One Time" dance when he performed it! There was a K-1 girl at the movies with me. She didn't come with me, she was there! I bet she wanted to do the dance to!
#3 - In the middle of the movie Justin has to rest his vocal chords because he has over used them. You see him sitting on the counch with a Viszla! Piper is a Viszla! I am not sure if that is his dog or not, but its his enough to let it on the couch with him! Justin Bieber and I have the same dog!
#4 - In the movie it showed people wearing fun purple 3D glasses....I didn't get those! I wish we had purple 3D classes!

Overall, I thought the movie was a fun movie. It was really fun to see in 3D but I didn't like paying 3D prices! As I left the movie theater I was thinking about it and here are some other thoughts that I had.

#1 -Justin seems like a good kid, but he seems to have it all at age 16. That sounds great at first, but I can't imagine how hard that would be. I hope that he stays grounded in what is important and lasting.

#2 - It sounds like he and his family believe in God. (they pray before concerts) I don't mean to be a downer but the music industry isn't the easiest place to be a light for Jesus. He is going to have to make some hard decisions to really be a follower of Jesus. I am sure he will mostly have pressure to do it they "popular way" or the way the world wants him to. None of us are perfect, but I hope he looks to the Lord to help him and is not afraid to be different and bold.

#3 - I hope that he has good people in his life to help him along the way. The movie shows that he has some fun people that work for him. I think that is great but I hope there are people there to help him in life...not just his career as a singer.

#4 - I hope he stays fun, clean and positive!

I have not hear much about it but I figured since most of you guys were going to see it that I better be in the know. I wasn't in the know about the acid washed jeans, so I am planning to stay on top of the trends for this one. Moms, if you are reading and are in question about if you should let your kiddo go see it, I will come with a full report on Monday so stay tuned. The K-1 Staff is Hired

I have been waiting to post this because we had not contacted all of our staff for this summer, but the last couple of weeks Diane, Melissa, Callie and I have been hiring all the counselors, kitchies, and office girls for summer 2011!!! Plus all the other directors hired for their camps. Its official, contracts have been sent out and now we wait to see if what we offered everyone works for their summer. What I think is so awesome to watch is the entire process of how God puts "working at a kamp" on someon'e heart and He somehow brings that someone to interview for Kanakuk. God gets that applicant to Diane and I and then eventually helps us figure out what cabin she will be assigned to. All that being said He hand picks your counselor for you! He also handpicks the kitchie, cook or office girl that is assigned to your cabin! I am so thankful that He uses me in the process but I am glad to know that its Him at work!

I remember when I was a kid I would ride the bus from Oklahoma City. I was excited for kamp but the most talked about topic on that bus each year was "I wonder what my counselor will be like!" For your laughter...a friend I went to camp with posted this picture on my facebook page. Yep, that is me in the white shorts, striped shirt. and permed hair. The bus in the back was my ride to camp. My best friend is the one with brown hair standing next to me (the tall one, not the little girl in front). We got to camp and found out we were not the same cabin. We were sad at first but we saw each other everyday and we both had a blast!

Well. this weekend I have time to get my "craft on" and I have found this on a website. I have tried it and its really easy! The Picture is not my handy work. Its from this blog. They put these on hair clips...so fun. I have put mine on headbands, pins, hair clips. I have even tried it with old thrift store ties. I might sew those on a purse. Try it out! The possibilities are endless!! All you need is fabric strips and a hot glue gun. (You might need your mom to help ya!)

Okay, I would not describe myself as a fashionista. (I don't think fashionista's wear nike shorts and stained t-shirts for three months of every year....but they should :) I know that I am not the most trendy person but I do think that working with kids and college students keeps me "in the know." Yesterday I found out how much I was NOT in the know. I ran into Target to pick up a few items and I walked passed the clothing section. I walked right past the clothing stand...thought about what I saw....stopped...and turned around to confirm if I saw what I thought I did. I did...ACID WASHED JEANS!!!! Who brought back the 80s? Okay, I could have had a clue when leggings got so popular...but I must admit, I love leggings. But Acid Washed Jeans????? I came home and googled it immediately. I found out it was fashion week in NYC. (Confirmed my non-fashionista status....every fashionista knows when that is happening) Low and behold... all over 2011 Fall Fashion....ACID WASH jeans! For those of you who don't know what they are, here is some celeb wearing them. (found this picture at INSTYLE)

I used to have a pair of these. In fact I had some in many colors. I would wear them with my hightop Reboks. (Laugh...but it was the style...just remember someday someone will laugh at what you wore when you were in Junior High :) Anyway, here is a pic of how people "rocked" acid wash jeans when I was in elementary school. ( I got this pic from "LikeTotally80s")

I must admit, they are a little more refined (alot less fringe) but I don't know if I can do it! I have been ridiculed way to much for my 5th grade school pictures in my teal green acid washed guess jeans. I just don't think I can relive the pain in 10 years when they are "so out of style" again and I am teased for wearing them. When I was 10...I can claim innocence. At age 30....it was my decision:)

Anyways...I am sure you all have a pair and wear them well. I am sure I would see you in them and think you looked stylish. I also wasn't teased when I wore them at age 10. Just ten years later (like you tease your mom for her old style when she was your age :) Which brings me to the point that some of your moms are my age (or just a little older) If I was wearing Acid Wash jeans in elementary school, I am sure some of your moms were wearing them in Junior High or Highschool! Be excited that you and your mom can share the same clothing styles...and your dad too! You should ask them if they still have theirs!

Mom, if you are reading this. You have most my gradeschool pics. I tried to find a pic of me in some Acid Wash jeans and I know those pics exist. Send them to me so I can post them! I think I can rival this 80s lady above!!!!

He has been my valentine for 6 years. ( one year dating and 5 years Married) I met him at Kanakuk Kamps (great place to meet your hubby...but not until your old enough...that was for you moms and dads!)

I thought I would simply post what I am feeling today. I woke up this morning and looked out the window. My neighborhood road is usually a busy one at 6 am. Not today. In fact you can't even tell the road is there. No tracks...no one has tried it...therefore I am not going to either. We have had few days of snow and my mom sent me this picture. It expresses exactly what I feel today so I thought I would share it with you.

The Super Bowl

Well, Last night was the Super Bowl and my family was cheering hard for the Steelers. Why? Because Lee's side of the family all lives in Pittsburgh and are HUGE steelers fans! When Pittsburgh was down in the second half we put the Terrible Towel on our dog Piper. Here is a pic. Two plays later they scored and got it within three We thought we had found their ticket to win, but obviously it didn't work! We did get a few laughs though. She didn't like it as much as we did.

Anyway, one of my favorite things to do is watch the super bowl commercials. Some of them are a little inappropriate in my book but there were a few that I absolutely loved. Here are my top three. (My favorite is at the end)

#3 I thought this was clever. I think whoever thought this up won a contest.

#2 - I liked this one too. Maybe because I think my dog really has the strength to do this especially if I dangled a dorito in front of her. I also could see my husband trying this and me saying "babe, don't hurt my dog."

A K-1 Kamper Spotlight....

There are many great things about my job. One of the things that really makes my day, week, month...year is when I get to hear what the kampers at K-1 are up to. I wish I could be at every soccer game, every school play, every dance competition, everything that a K-1 kamper does to cheer them on. The problem is that I cannot and since I can't be everywhere I really rely on people letting me know what the K-1 kampers are up to. K-1 has ages 7-13 kiddos and every year I am amazed what kid in those ages can accomplish. Today, I found out about a K-1 camper. Lucy Nickel, a k-1 month kamper last summer during term 1, wrote and memorized this speech. It was so good that she was chosen to move onto the regional level to compete! Not only that....a blog called "The Boot Scoop" recognized her! I couldn't find out fully what the Boot Scoop Blog is about but it seems to be its about supporting our troops, specifically wounded ones. There are cool campaigns of how people, who once were in the military are helping to give back to those who have sacrificed their life and body for the freedoms of our country. There are even celebrities on there who "put on their boots" to show they are committing to support the troops that come back. I loved it because right there next to a blog about Troy Aikman ( a famouse retired pro quaterback) was Lucy!!!! Way to go Lucy! I wish I could be at the regional speech meet with a sign that says GO LUCY!!!! The picture above is a screen shot of the blog where she is spotlighted. Click here to read her awesome speech. By the way Lucy, That speech was AWESOME! Well said and really well written. I wish more American's could honor their country like that!

I am so sorry that I have been so inconsistent. I have been traveling the last two weeks. Last week I did not have a computer because my work laptop crashed. So, i went out on the road with the iPad. I love my iPad but its hard to blog with an iPad because most hotels we stayed at did not have WI FI. An iPad doesn’t have a usb cord and that is how you connect to the internet in most 3 star hotels All that being said.. I AM BACK! I don’t travel anymore at all! Therefore I am 100% committed to cranking out a blog every day

Its going to be a snowy day tomorrow (6-18 inches at kamp!) I don't know about you but I love snow but sometimes it makes me long for summer. So, I thought I would post a funny skit from the summer. The Sites in Tulsa

Sorry It's been a couple days since I have blogged. Getting home from Columbia Mo with all that snow took awhile. Then I got home and my laptop crashed!!!! Yep, I don't have a computer this week while I am traveling and my iPad is standing in fo my laptop. It works well but it takes a little time to type. So I am in Tulsa and I am staying at a hotel right across the street from Oral Roberts University. I might interview your counselor there. If you had Gabby and Tricia last summer as your counselors you will be happy to know that I will see Gabby tonight. She goes to ORU. Anyway, here is a picture of some buildings at ORU. ORU is a christain school and all of their buildings have some significance from the bible. For example these buildings. They are built to specific dimensions mapped out in the bible for Noahs Ark. Somebody did some riots math and figured out how measurements in that time translate into measurements of our time. The tallest building represents the length of the ark. Yep, lay that tall building on it's side and you get how long the ark was. The middle buildings the height of the ark. That is how tall the ark was! The smallest building was the width of the ark. So, lay that building on the side and that is how wide the ark was. Isn't that cool that someone did that? Noahs Ark was huge. If you are anywhere in Tulsa you can see these buildings. I love it. Can you imagine a boat that big with tons of animals? God is so cool.

Snowing in Columbia Missouri

I am in Columbia Missouri this week for Kanakuk. Guess what? Its snowing!!!!! Its snowing alot. I don't know if I am going to make it home! HEre is a pic of my favorite running trail in Columbia....its covered in snow right now! All you Columbia Missouri campers....it looks like no school for you.

Fun Frame For You

Okay, so I was talking with a kamp mom about how the winter can be so dreary. Snow is fun but most the time it means that the sun is not out. I love the winter weather, but after awhile I long for the days of summer. So here is a fun thing you can do when its cold outside, and then maybe put up some favorite pics of camp. (or any summer fun) Kamp has yearly been my summer fun since I was age 10. I am now 32...you do the math of how many summers that is. (as a kid my family would also have fun in colorado every summer too) Okay, the pic above is what the finished product looks like. Here are the instructions how to. If building the frame is too advanced for you then you can take the glass out of an old frame...paint it and insert the wires. You could do it how they instructed OR you could staple a peice of yarn or string across the back (staple each side on the back of the picture frame. Have fun!

Taking a break from the iPad

Yes, this Christmas my hubby and I got an ipad. Yes, we entered the world of being technologically cool. (well, at least until apple comes out with a new gadget) I read they had some convention that introduced all the new tablets, basically every other company's version of the ipad. All reviews said that all the other company's don't even compete. They are really all competing for second place. The ipad, in all its splendor, can do so much BUT I am noticing one thing...it can consume your time. I have had my ipad for a month (I got it a few weeks before Christmas because that is when I celebrated Christmas with my side of the family) and I am already having to put boudaries on that thing. When you dont have anything to do the easiest thing to do is pick up the ipad. Why not waste your time surfing the net once agian, why not play angry birds, why not find a new cool app?

A guy wrote an article about taking his ipad back because of this. His thought was in the moments of boredom creativity comes out....great thoughts come. I agree! What about taking the time to think? What about taking the time to help someone out or even just do something for yourself? -HAve you ever had a computer/ipad 10 minutes? Where you get on the internet for 10 minutes and you look up and its and hour later? I promised my sweet dog a walk and then I surfed excercise time away from her!

Okay, I am not taking my ipad back but I am determined to use this thing for all it can do but also not use it all the time! I need to put it down, walk my dog, and think!

Here are my favorite thing to do on the Ipad

My husband really likes angry birds. It gets old to me.
I like ipaper. Its a toilet paper roll game where you touch the screen as fast as you can get the toilet paper roll to unroll. Its hillarious. Its fun to challenge people in a group. I can do it in 7 seconds. Lees' cousin Stephanie can do it in four seconds!
Pulse News - I can put all my blogs/news that I watch and they all pull up in a film strip. If there is a new post I can see it and click on it.
The ESPN app. I can pick my team and it pops up whenever my team is playing and what the score is! Perfect for OU basketball. There are so many games that I could never keep up.
Netflix - We don't have a t.v. in our room but now we can watch a movie as long as there is internet...aiport, car (my phone can be used for internet!) Its way better than any portable DVD player.

Let it Snow, Let it Snow, Let it Snow

Well, it snowed last night and I forgot my camera! My phone couldn't get a good picture kamp in the snow. It didn't snow much but enough to make kamp look white! I am hearing across the country that alot of people got snow days today. I am wondering if you are getting to stay home today. Some of you will get to stay home tomorrow. Here are my top ten things that I love to do on a snow day. (I didn't get one by the way...I had to fight the snow to get to work. Well, it wasn't that much of a fight. The roads were clear. Anyway, here we go...

Top Ten Great Things about a Snow Day

#10 - Sleeping in. I loved hearing the news cancel school when I was your age. I headed straight back to bed.

#9 - Drinking Hot Chocolate by the fire. - My family always had a wood burning fire place. We would get that thing going.

#8 - Snuggling up and watching a movie.- There is something fun about watching a movie when you should be in school.

#7 - Making Snow Ice cream. - Need the recipe? Click here

#6 - Reading a book. - I never get to read so why not when you are given time to!

#5 - Making a snow man - Check this creative snowman. Do you think you can outdo this one? I guess its not a snow man, but a snow train!

#4 - Sledding or Skiing - Be careful though...you could get hurt doing this! Don't be like these people

#3 - Snowball fights. - One time when I was on K-Life staff my K-Life co worker played a funny joke on me. I had two doors that went out side my first floor townhouse. He spent hours rolling up two HUGE snowballs (it came up to my waist) and put it in front of my doors. I couldn't get out. Well I could but I had to hoist myself up and over the snowball (or should I say Iceball) It was too heavy to move on my own. I had to wait until it melted but I ended up having to move it from my doors so the melted snow wouldn't flood into my house!

#2 - Eating Chili. I love chili. And my husband is making his tonight. And guess what...He was a trip man at kamp so his chili kind of tastes like the soup version of those yummy trip sloppy joes. YUMMMM!!!!

#1 - Watching the news all day to find out I have yet another snow day tomorrow and I get to do 1-9 all over again!

Talents that Amaze Me

Yesterday Michelle posted on my blog about a street performer that she way performing at the Belvedere Castle where my husband proposed. She gave me the link to this video for me to see. I was amazed. I had to share it with you. Then my mind went to many questions. How do you learn this skill? How did someone discover that this was possible? Can you play any song or just that one? How many times do you accidentally cut yourself on the saw?

Then I thought about my engament story and how my husband had to politely ask some bird watchers if they wouldn't mind moving so he could propose in the location he wanted to. (click here to see where) What if she was there that day, in that spot, instead of the bird watchers? Would she have moved? Or if she was there but not in that location...would I have been distracted by her talent? These are the thoughts that go through my head. Enough rambling by me...check it out. Broadway, Times Square, New York.....You and Your Mom?

"I want to be be apart of it...New York, New York." - The fact is I have been apart of it! Yep, one of my dearest friends used to live there AND I got engaged in New York! Yep, my husband sent me on a scavenger hunt that started in Branson and ended up in the big city. Here is the place in central park where Lee proposed. Its called the Belvedere Castle.

See the place where the people are standing. That is where Lee and I were standing when he got down on one knee!!!!! Lee had to ask to people bird watching if they didn't mind leaving for a few moments. Funny story for another time.

Anyways, enough about me. Lets talk New York...... Whats not to see in the city that never sleeps? (I always had to sleep when I was there...you walk everywhere!)

Kanakuk?

Yep. That's right. Kanakuk has a Mother Daughter Retreat THIS April. If you are 12 years old or older you and your mom can sign up to go to New York City and see it all! The dates are April 14th-17th. Kay Holiday is your tour guide (she goes every year so she know it well) and you will have a blast spending time with your mom! I am trying to figure out how I can get Kay to let me go. Hmmmm, Chaperone? No, moms are there they don't need another chaperone. What about China Town Purse finder? Or maybe trip luggage carrier? Maybe best street performer finder? Ooooo!, I know....Today show sign maker! I probably wont get to go but you can think of me if you vist the Belvedere castle in central park. Oh, and you have to buy a traditional I love New York T! (logo above)

My Holiday Break

I am back! Sorry it has been so long since I have posted. I took two weeks off for Christmas. I don't get to see my family a ton because of my job at kamp so I wanted to give them my undivided attention. Here was my Holiday Break:

I had my first round of the flu in a long time. I missed my mom and wanted her to feed me chicken noodle soup! I hate getting the flu!
I got better and drove 15 hours to Pittsburgh PA and then 15 hours home to branson a week later.
I cheered for the Pittsburgh Steelers
It snowed every day while I was there.
I ate a greasy philly cheesesteak sandwich, lots of carmel popcorn, and tons of Christmas food.
I got to meet Lee's cousin Randy who I have never met before. He has Cerebel Palsy and is in a wheel chair. I have never met anyone so joyful.
I got to go to a Christmas Display where I learned about all the Santas in the world. Who knew there were so many!
I went to a Christmas Eve service in an old beautiful church. We got to sing songs by Candlelight. That was neat.

My family tried to take a serious Christmas picture. It took a few times but I think we got a good one.

I learned of a new Wii game. Just Dance 2. We played it all break. If you want to see a funny video of my Husband and brother-in-law playing the game check out my facebook wall. Its pretty funny
I made a new headboard for my guest bedroom. I will post pics.
I played on my new ipad. I must admit it is addicting. (thanks Dad)
We played Christmas bells with the family. (its a fun game where you have to play Christmas music together with bells. I laughed alot)
I tackled the furniture store Ikea. That place is huge. I am trying to figure out how I can live in it for a week. (the literally set up living spaces. to showcase their stuff. I think its possible!)
I got to sleep in! I love sleeping in!

Now I am back. I am ready to blog again! Can't wait to see some of you in 6 months! That's right, once Christmas is over and the New Year begins....that means Kamp is around the corner.

Safe Movie Watching for YOU

Okay, so a little inside info into my husband's and my life. We don't have cable. Do you think we are crazy? Well, we were paying like 80 dollars a month for cable and we are NEVER home to watch T.V. so we decided to do without it. Guess what...we haven't missed it. We ramped up our internet (made it faster) and got netflix. In stead of 80 dollars a month we now pay $7.99 for netflix account. We can send one movie back and forth and have online streaming all we want. We bought a Roku box that allows us to stream all those movies onto our TV. What about current T.V. shows? Well, I don't watch them that much but I can watch the ones that I want on my computer. Most full episodes (like of Sing Off...my favortie show right now) are online. What about OU football games? I have watched every game on ESPN 360 (on the computer) or I went to a friends house and watched it with them. Anyway, I love Netflix but I started to get a little frustrated with it. Here is why. When you turn on the t.v. and then turn on the Roku box (maybe you do it through your Xbox or your blueray player, or apple t.v) you see all the movies that you have chosen to watch and then it shows you all the new movies. Well some of the movies and the pictures that go with them are AWEFUL! I am sad that they make movies like that, but the other night as I was scrolling across to watch Home Alone 2 (advent calender!) I saw some pretty "shady movies" that was not appropriate for anyone! I thought to myself I don't want to see that. I don't want Lee to see that and if I had kids I would not ever want them to see it. Then I started thinking of all of you. I know that some of you have netflix and these devices. So what did I do? I decided to call Netflix and tell them they needed more of a family friendly option. What I didn't know is that you can block certain movies! The people at Netflix were sooooo helpful! Here is how you do it.

Go to your netflix account and log in. When you get to your account it will look like this clcik on "YourAccount and Help" :

When you do that it will bring you here. Scroll down to Preferences. Click on the Change Parental Setting:

Before you get to this screen it will ask you to log in again. Then it will show this. Pick your rating and save.

Now, I picked PG13 and below because Lee and I love action movies like Bourne Identity and other figure it out movies. So we chose PG-13 for a little action but not violence BUT i realize that there are tons of PG-13 movies out there that can be "shady" and the netflix customer service guy said that there was one more thing I could do to make sure PG-13 was a movie that was appropriate.

Click on the Tab Movies You'll Love and then click on Taste Preferences

Here you can choose what movie not to suggest. These wont be blocked (unless their rating is one that you blocked by the parental control) but they just won't suggest them to you and you won't see them while you are scrolling to watch your Disney movie. You can choose Never, Often, Sometimes. You can see what I picked below. I said never to "Steamy", "Raunchy", "Controversial" and much more....

It even goes as far to ask you all types of questions about what type of movies you like to watch. It takes about 8 hours for your device to get your updates. I did this yesterday morning. I got home last night (late because our advent calender was to babysit for a family) and turned on my Roku and it worked! I tried to serach for an R rated movie and it would find it for me but it wouldn't let me play it. None of them were on my suggestions and ALL of the movies I "preffered" were suggested for me. No "shady" stuff that I shouldn't be watching. (my rule about movies is...if a kamper comes over and turns on my device would I be okay with what she saw.) Before I knew that I could set filters the answer was no. Now that I know how to filter...YES!!!! Have fun movie watching on your Christmas break. Now you can do it safely!

For your sister: A Tye Died Shirt...with a twist....

You can get ribbon and belt buckles really cheap at Hobby Lobby or Michaels. You can super glue or hand stitch if you don't have a sewing machine (or you mom can help you) For the instructions. click here

You can get some linen hand towels at Target or even Walmart. Print a stencil off the computer and paint it with fabric paint. For deatiled instructions, click here.

Don't let the girliness scare you away. What if you did this prject with his favorite sports team logo?!!!! (For my dad it would be OU!) If your dad loves the lonhorns you could print him a longhorn logo. (hmm...maybe I should print one upside down on my dads!)

.I know this looks hard but you can buy cheap clear glasses at target. (Look for the Re-Style glasses) Buy etching cream at michaels or Hobby Lobby, and print out a stencil. Then follow the instructions here!

For your Grandmom: A Photo Embellished Bag

There are cute cotten/canvis bags at Target, walmart, TJMaxx ext.. There are also canvas bags at craft stores for cheal. You could take a pic with your family and iron it on. She will love to carry things while thinking of you AND maybe she will come visit more! Click here for instructions.

For Your Mom: Body Scrub

Your mom can feel like a day at the spa...created by you! There are only 4 ingredients needed. The only one I didn't know was "carrier oil" Of course I googled it. You can get it at bath stores or online at amazon.com. I also don't think you have to use a plastic pipette. You can just use a medicine dropper (the kind you put ear drops in. For your Brother: Sports Collage

Get a picture frame and get some pics of his favorite sports teams, news paper articles ect... Get some Modge Podge and make a collage. Frame it in the frame. You could even do HIS sports pictures.

Day 11 - (tommorrow) Go to thrift store, buy a cheesy christmas sweater, and take pics in a photo booth. Definitely doing this one!
Day 12 -(Sunday) Watch a Christmas movie. I am trying to find the Matchstick girl. Its one with "Rudy" from the cosby show. It was one of my favorites as a kid.

Hey girls, sorry its been a few days. I have had a Christmas party every night this week and we have had a busy week here at Kanakuk. Lee and I are even behind in our Advent Calender. We are going to catch up this weekend. Well, my mom came to visit last weekend and she showed me this video. I couldn't believe my eyes! This is the only dog in the world that can walk on two feet. What determination that takes. The story is pretty remarkable.

Well, On with my advent Calendar. Last Friday Lee and I were supposed to Adopt a Salvation Army kiddo and buy them gifts for Christmas. We didn't have time on Friday so we did it yesterday. Lee and I picked two kids from the tree at walmart.

I picked Jalyn, a 7 year old girl who wanted a Furreal Pet. So, she got a really fun hoodie that she could wear to school and a Furreal Pug Dog. It was so cute I wanted to keep it. She will have more fun with it than I and Piper would destroy it in about 20 minutes.

Lee picked Cameron a 3 year old boy who wanted Toy Story toys. Can I tell you that they don't make much Toy Story stuff that is age appropriate for 3 year olds? Anyway, after searching, Cameron will get a sweat suit/athletic gear outfit and a big Buzz Light Year toy.

I wish I could be a fly on the wall when they open it up!

Saturday the advent calendar told us to go around and look at lights. That was fun!

Yesterday the advent calendar told us to make Cinamon Bagels. We have to do that later on this week because we didn't have time. Don't worry, I will post about that. I will not be making them. My husband is the one who makes bagels.

Today: I am excited about today. We are going to anonymously drop a Christmas gift on a friends door step, We have not figured out which friend and we have not picked a gift. I will probably make the gift (which I will post about tommorrow!) One thing for sure is that we have to be stealth and I have to pick someone who will not read this blog. Hmmmmm.....I will get back to you tommorrow on that one!

Advent Day #3 - Adopt a Kid

Last night our trip to Silver Dollar City was magical. It really is one of the best Holiday Experiences out there. There are millions of lights everywhere. There is a tree that does a fabulous light show and tons of holiday fun. Here are the pictures from last night.

Advent Calendar - Day 1

Here we go on my advent Calendar. I forgot to take pictures of it this morning but I will and post it tommorrow. The first Christmas activity will be to build a fire and drink hot chocolate. I know the first one is kind of tame but My mom is coming to spend a few days with us so I figured that would be something that she will enjoy. Here is my recipe for warm drinks:

Peppermint Hotchocolate:
1 packet of Hot Chocolate
Peppermint creamer (for coffee)
Stir it with a candy cane
whip cream if you are feeling sassy

Apple Cider Tea
1 Packet Apple Cider
1 Packet Earl Gray Tea

Reno's Peppermint Mocha (better than starbucks)
Pur a cup of coffee ( i like hazlenut flavor)
Put about 3 Tablespoons of hot chocolate
Put in a little peppermint creamer
One sweetner packet or sugar
Stir with a candy cane
Whip cream if you are feeling sassy.

If you are wondering what I am doing tonight...I am sitting by a fire drinking some hot chocolate.

Many of you know that Kanakuk has been apart of my life for a long time. I was a kamper for 7 years and I have now worked on staff with Kanakuk 15 years. Of course my first 6 years were only working in the summers. This summer I will have been here full time for 9 years! Ladies, (I guess and gentlemen if my husband is reading) here is where it all began. My first summer at Kanakuk was summer of 1989 but I had no idea that I was going to camp until my parents gave me Kanakuk for Christmas. My best friend had gone the year before and had told me all about it. I saw the video and was sold. My parents claimed they had to "think about it" but little did I know that they had already signed me up. When I was a kid there were only 4 camps. You could go to K-1, K-2, K-3 (which is now K-West), and K-4 (which is now K-Kountry). Since there was only 4 camps you had to sign up really early to get a spot. They sent you a letter if you got a spot. (They didn't have email back in the day) My mom wrapped that letter up and put it under the tree. Check it out:

Did you notice that I had a perm? Its the only perm I have ever had and its the only perm I ever will have. You probably cannot tell but I have on my Christmas PJs. I got a pair every year. There are three ducks holding up three wreaths. At the top it says in big bold letters..."Duck the Halls".

By the way, kamp is a great christmas gift moms and dads. In my life it was the gift that kept on giving. That summer (in 1989) I gave my life to Christ in Barn 5 at K-4 (K-Kountry) Another great Christmas gift is sponsoring a kid to go to Kids Across America. Sorry I have been gone for a little while. I was away with much needed family time and not alot of time to jump on a computer! I took a little sabbatical but I am back with some fun posts in store for you. Well, its officially Christmas! Last night I put my tree up. I will share what is on my tree soon. Today, I am going to share what My husband and I are doing. We are going to do our first Advent Adventrue Calendar. Each day I will post what is in our Calendar. I am the one creating it but I can't post it now because Lee reads my blog! It will ruin the suprise. Each day we are going to do something fun in the Christmas Spirit. Here is what my Advent Calendar will look like.

This is not my house, but I will post a picture of what mine looks like. (I am going to use more Christmassy paper) We will not start until Decemeber first of course! Maybe you and your family can do something like this! I have always wanted to do this when I had kids, but then Lee and I decided "Why Wait?" Why not do our own this year!!!!!! As we approach Thanksgiving I want to post about how we can be Thankful and how we can help others. We are truly blessed to have clothes and food not to mention all the other stuff we have. There are kids out there, your age, that have nothing. I want to tell you about Compassion International. This is a fabulous ministry and I challenge all of you to get involved. For 38 dollars a month you can help a child get food and medicine. You can even pick the child you want. They will send you a picture and you can pray for that child and really let them become a part of your family...even if they are hundres of miles away! It could be a neat thing for your familty to do, or you and your friends could have a bake sale to raise money to sponsor a child for a year! Here is the website.

My Thoughts:

On finances: I don't know how picking gray for a house determines this but okay, I do like to save my money. I always had a piggy bank. I don't think I have ever "moved in for the attack". Maybe that means that I saved for something then bought it. I definitely have "moved in for the attack" on a sale!

Appearance: I do prefer a more casual appearance. I have a job where I can where nice jeans to work! I hope I don't look scruffy, but the reality is I do look scruffy more times than not in the summer.

The red flower: False! I would much rather talk about relationships than work! But I guess my work is all about relationships....hmmm....how does it know me! (Just kidding it doesn't.)

The Black Car: It has nothing to do with image of friends. I just like the look of the black car. Ummm...most of my closet is from TJMAX. They sell the "didn't sell" clothes. I am thinking that I am not always up on the latest brands. I do like nice jeans though. My jeans and my tennis shoes are the things I wear the most (I run alot so I need good tennis shoes) and therefore are the things I spend money on.

Brown Teddy Bear - I would like to think this about myself, but my friends would be the authority on if I am there for them. Thanks quiz for knowing what my goal in frienships are. ( I also want to be compassionate towards friends. I guess a brown teddy bear doesn't show that. Maybe a pink one would.....)

Why I Love Kay Holiday

I know some of you have met Kay Holiday at Kamp in the summers. If you have ever attended a donut social (because you have come to camp 4 years or more) you have met her. If your parents were campers they probably know her. She is the best. Here are the top ten reasons I love Kay Holiday. (There are 100s but I thought I would narrow it down to 10)

10. She lives at kamp all year round. ( no worries she is not at kamp, but her fully heated and airconditioned house is right smack dab in the middle of the K-1 girls side. Didn't know it was there? You might have to find it next summer) Isn't that cool that she gets to see kamp in all its seasons?

9. She played basketball for the University of Arkansas. I am not a Razorbacks fan but I appreciate the Razorbacks. I think its cool that she played D1 basketball.

8. She loves to fish. I don't have patience for fishing but I love it that she does

7. She loves coffee. So do I! I can always count on Kay to have coffee

6. She never forgets a name. She is so good with remembering people.

5. She works so hard. She loves kamp and does everything for kamp!

4. She used to be a director at K-1 and K-Kountry. I wish I could have seen it because I know she was good.

3. She loves the Lord with all her heart.

2. She makes sure that all those great pictures taken in the summer get put online. (And get taken for that matter)

In honor of Tim who has entered a Youtube Epic Movie Contest. (which you can vote for him everyday. Click here to vote) I thought I would post one of my favorite movies that he has done. Before the days where Tim won NBC's American Gladiator and even before the days he was the Kanakuk Kamps videogrpaher, He was a Kanakuk babysitter. The full time directors have babysitters that are hired to help babysit their kids during the summer. They are kamp like counselors. I never was a kamp babysitter but I know they have a blast. In 2002 (and many other years) Tim was the Cooper kids babysitter. They would spend their summers making movies. Of course Tim was the director and editor and producer. I thought I would post it for you. This is a 43 minute movie so you might have to make some time for it. I hope you enjoy it. It was filmed in the summer all over K-1. You will recgnize all the places. Some of them have even changed! p.s. Most of you know Kristen and Rebecca as your counselor or leadership gal. This is when Kristen was in highschool (maybe even Junior high) and Rebecca was K-1 camper age. Some of you might be cabin mates with Claire! I don't even think she was two yet!

Well Halloween is coming up this weekend and I thought I would post about what the Farley family does during Halloween. I don't get super excited about celebrating ghouls, goblins, the devil and stuff like that. Its kind of scary. I am more of a cutesy halloween person. My pumpkins are usually out and thats about it. But, I do embrace trick or treating. I love being a safe house for kids to come and get candy AND I get to meet fun families in my neighborhood. I love getting to see fun creative costumes as well. On top of that...who doesn't love having a huge bowl of candy sitting in their house! I will probably go to target and get Piper (my dog) a costume. She will be sitting in our living room looking out the window at all the children...so why not make her festive for all to see. One of my favorite things about halloween is that the day after all the wigs and costumes (non- ghoulish) are on sale. Its time to go shopping for the camp skit closet. Plus tons of websites put some creative ideas up for costumes that I can maybe rely on for camp parties! Here are a few for you.

What Would You Do If You Could Volunteer for a Year

Hey gals! Some of you know that I have two blogs. On my staff blog I posted about a contest I found on Ikea's webiste. I thought I would share it with you! Ikea is a furniture store. If you live in Atlanta or Dallas or Houston or Chicago you probably have been. Anyway, Ikea is doing a contest that will give someone $100,000 to better society. You could start a non-profit organization ( a charity) for anything you want OR you could use the money to volunteer your time for a year. Maybe since you are in school you could give that to someone who is a missionary. You could sponsor a ton of kids at Kids Across America. Maybe there is someone in your community that needs the money. You could even start a charity. There was a Kanakuk Kamper that recently raised money for kids in Haiti! My Almost Smart Car

So, I am traveling again with Kanakuk and I am loving being in Dallas. I miss my hubby and my sweet piper but its fun seeing people out on the road. All of us on the Dallas trip have to be everywhere at the same time so they decided to rent me a car. So I show up to the rental car place to pick up my rental car. My confirmation sheet (the page that proves that I rented a car online) said that I would be getting this car or a car like it

Its a small car but it is four door andcan seat four and I was excited to drive it around dtown. When I showed up at the Rental counter they said that I was going to get this car.

What? A smart car? In Dallas? On Dallas Highways? Can you imagine me in this zipping around big Semis? They could squash me. An hour before I could have cared less what car they gave me. I literally said as long as it gets me from point a to point b it didn't matter....well, I lied. I just couldn't do the smart car. So I upgraded and it only cost me 10 dollars more.....total! Here is my ride for the rest of the week.

So, if you think you see me in Dallas...Honk!

So sorry that it has been since last Tuesday since I have posted! Out on the road I don't always have access to internet. I know, I know that every place has internet but I am always coming and going so I don't always get a chance to stop. Here is a fun pic at Oklahoma State Univeristy. Okay, I am sitting in a student center at a certain college interviewing staff for Kanakuk. I interviewed some great gals. When I walked in I saw this trash can. I am not at the University of Oklahoma so I was curious why this was at this school. You could clearly see the OU but I couldn't see what was around it. I knew that it wasn't going to be nice. So, where do you think I am? By the way, this is not a person's trash can. This is a school funded trash can. So what school would have this trash can in their student center? I will give you a hint....think halloween colors.

Last Friday I was in Fayetteville interviewing Kanakuk Staff for summer 2011. Do you see your counselor or kitchie? This is a pic of the girls from U of A. Up next? I don't know you will have to check back tomorrow. All the girls in fayetteville talked about how much they miss you!

I'm Third...living it out

Hey guys! I found this story on the internet today and I thought I would share it with you. I don't know these people but its a great example of I'm Third. This young man's dream was to score a touchdown. The players had to give up a lot to let him score, especially the defending team. The game score will be forgotten in 6 months but this boy will remember this moment for a lifetime. Check it out.
